Eso dicen que dijo Benjamin Franklin (qué tipo más admirable, oigan), pero tambien circula por ahí una versión más individualista: "Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither".
En realidad ambas son derivaciones de la cita original (no atribuída con total certeza, pero sí bastante probabilidad):
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.En mi concepción liberal del mundo, el único motivo que justifica la existencia de un estado (y, por lo tanto, lo que me sacó del anarquismo para dejarme donde estoy ahora) es la justicia. Los hombres tienen una serie de derechos y libertades pero puede suceder que alguien pretenda coartarle a otra persona su ejercicio. Eso debe evitarse. Los controles de seguridad en los aeropuertos empezaron como un paso de aduana más (identificación y comprobar que no se trafica con nada ilegal o se hace contrabando, cosa que ya de por sí me parece fatal) y han derivado a lo que tenemos hoy día. Ganas me dan de esconder nitroglicerina en un bote de champú de viaje, sólo por joder. Otro ejemplo es lo que se comentaba el otro día sobre el trato que reciben los clientes en algunos centros comerciales.
¿Dónde está el límite? ¿La seguridad colectiva justifica la pérdida de derechos y libertades individuales? Democracia-demagogia-populismo-fascismo. En otros tiempos los altercados fueron otros, pero la secuencia fue la misma. ¿Queremos que la historia se repita?
